yes we evaluated gitlab.

* from a security perspective it is a nightmare (vast amounts of code
and involving arbitrary code execution)
* from a code volume perspective there is extra cost involved in the hosting.
* the load average on my server jumped to a permanent 0.6 (60% cpu
utilisation) with *NO USERS*
* load time was well over 20 seconds due to the amount of javascript shit.

yes it does.  the hassle associated with it unfortunately has already
eliminated it from consideration.

unfortunately the hosting, security audit, maintenance and hassle is
not monetarily zero cost.

they have employees specifically dedicated to that task, as do raptor
engineering.
