jean-paul i have an idea, i will make a snaller test with minimal code in it. 
also separate out the Makefiles.

i think it really important we get a handle on how different parts of the soc
work, and isolate issues into small tests

apologies this lack of experience is clearly testing some assumptions of the
code :)
