luckily, we need (at different phases)... kinda... everything. from
writing a BOOT ROM (a cut-down version of u-boot in SPL mode), to bare
metal unit tests written in assembler, an instruction-level simulator,
VPU and 3D drivers - the works.

the bit about python was the layout. we also need a couple of people
to work on that: basically rather than use a GUI to click, point, blah
blah and then it doesn't work because no two people can replicate the
layout, we're doing it in a *programmatic* fashion, with *python*
scripts saying "the ALU is this big, the inputs come in at the top,
the outputs go at the bottom, now auto-route it, now place that at
coordinates X,Y, repeat, repeat, repeat".

that's pretty straightforward however has some quirks.
