star.  it's just good practice, the only exception i ever heard which
was reasonable was python checking in the configure script as well as
the configure.in.  the reason given was to ensure that re-running
autoconf never resulted in unexpected changes or dependencies on a
specific version *of* autoconf.

also could you run pep8checker (or autopep8) and remove spaces at the
end of lines?  a recent annoying change to vim results in whitespace
being added and it's a pain in the neck that has to be kept an eye on.
