i forgot to mention.  IBM is one of the largest computing patent holders in
the world.  SCO found out what that is like (IBM hired hundreds of lawyers
to review the entirety of the linux kernel source code when "accused" of
appropriation of SCO source)

to reduce the "800lb gorilla" effect, compliance with the POWER ISA results
in an automatic royalty free grant to all of IBM's relevant patents.

i will ask Hugh if this includes the ABI.
