I never thought I was pushing the limits, but maybe I am.

I'm considering a consumer-grade server. With media going digital,
including things like family snapshots, long-term preservation of data
is becoming important. Any time data is read into memory and written
out again, data loss is possible, and in forty of fifty years it adds
up.

Yes, of course one keeps backups, but backups of corrupted data are
deadly.

This is why early detection is important -- one can avoid corrupted
backups. Correction? Not so important -- one can always recover from
another copy.
