Did that make any sense, Samuel? Thornton notes that although the logic is
simple the design is quite complex, being as it is effectively a 2D
encapsulation and extended application of the 1D "stall" rules of an
in-order system.
Mitch noted that even Patterson was unable to properly understand the
effectiveness of precise scoreboards: it was why when Patterson's book came
out, in exasperation Mitch began those book chapters based on his
successful augmentation of the 6600 system into a multi issue precise
design.
Listening to what academics say about the 6600, when they have not properly
studied Thornton nor had the experience that Mitch did of architecting the
Opteron Series, will only mislead you on this really complex area of
computer science.
