ok mul's good, aleksander - both for 32 and 64 bit (yay!)

i made a few mistakes along the way, apologies i was committing
without properly running the unit test, once or twice.  using the
diffs here maay be easier than doing them by hand:

i do recommend reviewing the diffs, because that way you'll see each
individual correction (as i encountered them), as opposed to "just the
final result".  each one is commented with an explanation, none of
them "glommed together".
