a quick note about the idea floated in tuesday's meeting to use "wrappers".

i have worked with python wrappers in the past: they turn out to be absolutely
awful, creating massive slow-downs of at least 100%.

also, the code that is almost 95% completed shows that wrappers are
unnecessary.

this is being dealt with by another route that does not involve throwing
away 5+ months of work.

we are under time and budget pressure.

we cannot afford to throw away the work that has already been done.
