jean-paul, this is a weird one: despite the fact that there has been
no discernible change in the build script, alliance has suddenly
stopped building.

do you remember the coriolis2 patches i submitted for building
on debian, where all those libraries could not be found?
and it was libtool-related, a known issue, where recursive
dependencies had to be explicitly listed at the top level?

i think this is the same thing.

although, there may be something else, very weird, going
on: a "git diff" shows a massive set of comparative changes
which is not normal.  many of them showing removal of code
which is the same library causing issues.
