the "assumption" on which bootstrap is operating is that below a
certain pixel-width, the menu may be truncated to one of those "things
in the top right corner with stripes".

if we want to be able to navigate to page, sub-page, sub-sub-page,
sub-sub-sub-page, we need those links as menu options.

so yes, they can be removed.... except it then becomes impossible to
navigate down the tree of pages.
